A: Jump rope is designed to improve body mass or composition by substituting fat for lean muscle. Rope jumping can help to shape and tone muscles in the upper and lower body. It can also tone and shape legs and calves. In addition rope jumping is excellent for weight loss. At 120 turns per min., it burns approximately 12.9 calories per minute for a person weighing 150 lbs or 68 kilos. (Running burns 13 calories per minute) If you weigh more you will naturally burn more calories.

The only book we recommend for jump rope training is Buddy Lee Jump Rope Training System available on line and in stores.

A: The heavy rope is designed to challenge more of the upper body. Hyperformance speed jump rope training is designed to develop lightning fast reflexes in both lower and upper extremities. Calisthenics and weights are most effective for developing upper body strength for your son. Example: pushups, exercise tubing, pull ups, light weights.

Heavy ropes are limited as to producing competitive advantages. Train with the rope the way you want to move in your sport. 25 Olympic Sports and 50 Olympic Gold Medallists have benefited from my program.

To decide whether a heavy or lightweight speed rope is the best rope when training for your sport, use my motto: Train with the rope that allows you to best simulate the speed, quickness and agility required of your sport. A lightweight aerodynamic speed rope easily responds to directional change with minimum air resistance. Heavy ropes combined with weight training primarily provide upper body plyometrics workouts but aren’t effective in increasing quickness of the hands and feet. The best application of a jump rope training program is the development of speed, quickness, agility and explosiveness. A lightweight speed rope maximizes these and other benefits of jump rope training.

A: It truly makes a difference to begin jumping with an evenly weighted rope that turns at a slower pace to master the two basic skills and learning how to coordinate the rope swing with each jump. I recommend the Magic Speed Rope.

A: Please see Jump Rope Institute.

A: We can custom make ropes for athletes taller than 6' 5". Out standard 9' cord is suited for anyone up to 6' 5".

A: Rope jumping will get you in good shape. High Step is a techniques that especially helps the abs (see www.jumpropeinstitute.com) and look under programs). After learning the proper technique and developing a jump rope capacity (consult same website), jump 5-15 min. 3-5 days per week.

A: Sounds like me, at age 13 I was doing 1000 pushups at night and 500 sit-ups 4 days a week, to include fast pace running and lifting weights for my wrestling training.

A: When he masters the skill, rope jumping will become his best training partner and the key to his Basketball success!

  1. The "Magic of the Rope Video" shows you how to master 40 skills and how to put them into programs for speed, quickness, agility, explosiveness, ball control, strong legs, ankles and feet. This video will get him off to a safe and jumping start. At the same time it is all inclusive; the jump rope techniques in video are sports specific and it is the only video designed for serious athletes.
  2. The Rope Master is the rope for your son. It turns with unmatched speed and control in all directions and is designed to produce competitive advantages.

A: Besides being too intense for beginners, there is another disadvantage, the possibility of injury to your knees and ankles increases because more force is required to jump over the slower-moving rope, so more force is created when you land. In addition the challenge to the arm and shoulder muscles and joints by the heavy rope may be too much for the novice rope jumpers. The additional weight can decrease their arm control and thus increase their risk of injury.
